7 Ways to play with your newborn!
I get asked a lot what “play” with a newborn looks like. Playing might not feel natural at first, but it’s the best way to help your baby develop!
Here are some ways to play with your newborn:
01. Tummy time
It is never too soon to start supervised tummy time! Tummy time strengthens your baby’s back and neck muscles and prevents flat spots from forming on the back of baby’s head.
02. Talk to them!
Engage with them face to face, tell them about the weather, and while doing so use big, exaggerated facial expressions.
03. Sing a song!
Wheels on the bus has a magical spell on babies.
04. Stretch & move their arms & legs
Babies might not love to stretch initially (they’ve been so crunched up for so long) but it’s excellent for them! Stretching activates their vestibular system, which is responsible for balance, and helps keep their muscles and joints loose.
05. Read a book
It’s never too early to read to your baby!
06. Music time
“When young children are exposed to music, their brains change. Among other benefits, music can:
Improve moods and empower young children by reducing stress levels. Even listening to sad music can be good thanks to its cathartic power, making it easier for children to get in touch with their emotions.
Stimulate the formation of brain chemicals such as dopamine and oxytocin. When these are released, children are encouraged to share toys, empathize and trust others.
Boost concentration skills and productivity.
Improve learning and grades.
Develop spatial intelligence – laying the ground for an interest in mathematics, engineering, computer science and architecture.
Improve vocabulary and creativity.” — UNICEF
07. Show them high contrast pictures
High contrast pictures enables baby to see clearly in an otherwise blurry world, thus helping their brain growth and improving their visual development. Plus babies love them!
Bonus tip: have your toddler paint high contrast pictures for your baby! All you need is black paint and white paper!
